In 2024 and 2025, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. All over the country, we will remember that it was thanks to the Allied military forces, supported by the resistance, that the Netherlands was liberated. We remember the victims who fell.
The scars left by the Second World War are still visible 80 years later. Most directly in families which lost loved ones who were murdered during the Holocaust or who died fighting in the Netherlands and in the Netherlands East Indies/Indonesia. But the Second World War also has far wider consequences, for example in the way we view the world.
A society can only function well in a country where there is no war, where human rights are respected and where there is no oppression. Celebrating 80 years of freedom is also a celebration that we live in a constitutional democracy. A country where everyone can have a say requires everyone to bear their responsibility.
In 1945, our freedom was returned to us, but in many places in the world, war is still being waged. Take the war in Ukraine, for example. Freedom is never a given. Every day, we must work hard to accommodate other people and safeguard our democracy. In that way, the Netherlands will continue to be a free and tolerant country. We therefore do not celebrate freedom alone, but together. Because freedom is something you share.
