The portal vein is formed by the junction of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein behind the neck of the pancreas. These two veins joining at approximately a right angle.
After its formation the portal vein ascends behind the neck of the pancreas, then ascend behind the first part of duodenum, to enter the right free edge of lesser omentum. The portal vein ends by dividing into right and left branches that enter the porta hepatis.
