The approach to Capitol Peak via the Ditch Trail is a beautiful hike through the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness. 6.5 mi/10.5 km in length with 2340 ft/713 m of elevation gain one way; it is filled in summer with wildflowers, aspen trees, alpine streams and...cows. Due to previous bear problems, approved hard-sided bear canisters are required for overnight use in the Capitol Creek drainage. The road to the parking area is passable with any 4wd or higher clearance vehicle.
