Mount Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous United States at 14,505 ft, but the path to the top requires a permit which can be tricky to obtain. Shortly after Half Dome, we head to Mt Whitney on this day hike, 23 miles, 6700 ft elevation gain from Whitney Portal. Only 82 miles from the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere at Badwater Basin in Death Valley, Mt Whitney of the Sierra Nevadas is also the 11th highest point in the United States and 4th most isolated peak in North America. Initially summited in 1873, the peak was initially called Fisherman's Peak.
