The story revolves around Shankar, a criminal who lives with his pregnant wife Kanta. He prays to Lord Shiva that if blessed with a male child, he will ensure the child grows up to be honest and decent. Shankar switches his son with one belonging to renowned stage artist Ashok Kumar to protect him from his criminal life. Shankar is arrested and sentenced to 14 years in jail. After his release, he finds that his plan has backfired, leading to a series of dramatic events as he tries to set things right.
