TAIL TODDLE
Tail Toddle a close harmony group from Utrecht, in the Netherlands, described by some as "a Dutch folk band, which in terms of sound comes close to Pentangle and Steeleye Span", visited Scotland in the mid 70’s performing folk music of England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and their Dutch homeland.
The band comprised several members of the Duindam family, all talented musicians and vocalists.
As with other Dutch bands they tried to draw on their own tradition, with songs from the 17th and 18th century - beautiful arrangements of these old songs and ballads, performed with "a capella" harmonies and exquisite accompaniments on a variety of instruments.
Jan Duindam, lead member of the group is a skilled guitarist, banjo, dulcimer, epinette, hurdy-gurdy, violin and mandolin player. Nol Duindam’s instruments are accoustic bass guitar, flute, mandolin, guitar, and concertina. Younger brother Stefan also plays guitar, bazouki, mandolin, epinette, and banjo. Whilst sister Blanca plays guitar, psalter and mandolin. All are acomplished vocalists.
Their repertoire was widely sourced from traditional singers, songbooks, friends and through research into the Dutch musical tradition. Fine singing, authentic instruments - the style of the British bands listened to closely, but given their own spin – were their trademark.
In the 1970s, the Netherlands went a roots revival. Many songs were collected and broadcast on the Dutch radio program "Onder de groene linde" (Under the green lime). Not much of the regions Folk Music was ever however released on record or cd.
Around 1974 the Dutch folk revival peaked but the mainstream popularity of the roots revival was to be short-lived.
Tail Toddle however sucessfully released their album "Tot Leeringhe Ende Vermaeck" (MU7424) on the Stoof label in 1977. Stoof, founded by Job Zomer was a subsidiary label of Munich Records.
Tail Toddle was formed in 1971, toured extensively throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England and in Scotland, playing at festivals, in clubs and small theaters during the period 1975 to 1978. The band was disbanded in 1978.
Jan Duindam continues to perform as a guitarist, singer-songwriter, guitar-teacher, choir-leader and composer. Some fine examples of his works can be heard at: / jan duindam - topic
