Local gurus and patrons of wooden masks, brought together 118 artisans to form the collective Mahishbathan Gramin Hastashilpa Samabay Samity Limited in Kushmundi (Dakshin Dinajpur). The collective works toward promoting the local mask making craftsmen.
Recognising their efforts, the MSME Department, Govt. of West Bengal nominated Kushmundi as a Rural Craft Hub of Bengal in 2013. Banglanatak dot com, a Kolkata-based national NGO, has undertaken the initiative of developing these clusters.
In December 2014, the artisans collective celebrated their first village fair ‘Mukha Mela’.
Kushmundi craftsmen work mostly with the locally available Gamar wood to produce these traditional masks. They are known to have been used as part of a ritual dance practised by the local community. More recently, the masks have become collector items and are also used as home decorative.
