The mmWave frequency bands are being exploited to help meet the growing demand for broadband wireless data. The growth of high volume consumer applications such as 5G cellular and broadband satellite continues to drive the demand for low cost mmWave components in low-cost SMT packages.
While the physical appearance of a packaged mmWave ICs is often much the same as packaged RF ICs, the potential for the packaging parasitics to cause serious performance degradation is greatly increased. This presentation by Liam Devlin at the November 2022 meeting of the ARMMS RF & Microwave Society discusses different packaging technologies and the problems that the packaging parasitics can cause.
