Fort Santiago is a fortified fortress, or citadel, built by Spanish navigator and governor Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1571 for the new established city of Manila in the Philippines. The fortress is located within the walls of Intramuros, which is a historic walled town in Manila.

Throughout its history, Fort Santiago was captured several times by British occupation in 1762, by the Americans during the Philippine-American War in 1898, and by the Japanese when Japan invaded the country during WWII between 1941 and 1942. During its times of capture, the Fort has been used as an enemy base, as a prison, and as a weapons storage.

Today, Fort Santiago remains to be a popular tourist attraction amongst visitors, as it was declared as a Shrine of Freedom since 1950. It is now been reconstructed, preserved, managed and maintained by the Intramuros Administration since 1992 and has been a national historic treasure of the Philippines.
