If anyone tells you hardcore rave music is just for old people then point them in the direction of ROAR's Track Attack for proof that it bloody well is not!
ROAR HQ has been delighted not only by the number of under-30s producers submitting their killer tunes for Track Attack, but at being able to share them with our audience - and here's another!
UGLY DUCKLING is the alias of 28-year-old producer BULLET S from Yorkshire, who says he set up ERUPT RECORDS in 2016 after "noticing how few breakbeat hardcore labels had been founded in the north and wanting to contribute to the region having a scene of its own."
He added: "Erupt intends to take a big nod from breakbeat hardcore's roots in hip-hop and, much like hip-hop, commentate on life on the streets in this part of the world, known for its fair share of social issues."
Born in 1993, one of the prime years of rave music, Bullet became fixated on the house and techno sounds he remembered from his teens, later discovering classic breakbeat hardcore labels and finding himself sucked deeper down the rabbit hole before he finally developed an interest in producing in 2011, and has been doing so under different pseudonyms since.
Inspired by the breakbeat hardcore and jungle productions coming out on labels such as Knitebreed, N4 Records, and Seventh Storey Projects, and with events popping up close to his home around Leeds, Manchester and Huddersfield, Bullet decided to focus on creating his own modern take on breakbeat hardcore and jungle.
With more free time due to the pandemic, Bullet was finally able to get tracks ready, and this tune, Better Than Your Cult, is an exclusive bonus track on the vinyl release of Ugly Duckling's debut EP, It's The Personality That Counts.
Says Bullet: "It was intended as a nod to the off the wall, underground vibes of '92 and '93 tracks by the likes of Rufige Kru or Automation, a hardcore track that felt authentic to what fans love collecting on vinyl."
He adds: "We're going to always have one or two vinyl exclusive tracks on each release which don't come with the digital version, as an incentive to get people buying wax again. This video gives you a taster of it, as the beginning and end is cut short - but you can get the full tune on the record!"
It's The Personality That Counts, and all other upcoming Erupt releases, can be bought or downloaded from eruptrecordsuk.bandcamp.com.
Meanwhile, Bullet S hopes to get his first official EP out digitally on Erupt this July, and frankly ROAR can't wait to hear more from this exciting young producer.
