Let’s start out with the TV series since that’s the closest to release.
The series is called Crystal Lake and it’s a team-up thing between A24, Peacock and Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller which is a hell of a team.
As for when it’s coming out, there’s no official announcement but when Adrienne King, the original Friday the 13th final girl announced that she was going to be in the show, she ended her Instagram post with Coming 2024 and since we’re in August of 2023 without even a poster to speak of for this show, I think that’s a pretty good indicator that it’s not coming out this year.
And just in case you don’t believe this show is happening, not only did Universal order a full first season, they also put out a rock solid statement that says: “Friday the 13th is one of the most iconic horror franchises in movie history and we were dying to revisit this story with our upcoming drama series Crystal Lake. We can’t wait to get to work with Bryan Fuller, a gifted, visionary creator who I’ve had the pleasure of being a longtime friend and collaborator, along with our incredible partners at A24, in this updated version for Peacock that will thrill long-standing fans of the franchise.”
When this was originally announced, it was advertised as both a prequel and a retelling of the first Friday the 13th but recently when its written about, people talk about it just being a prequel and I can’t really find any concrete info on what the case there is BUT back when this was announced last October, Variety stated that since Horror Inc. won’t be involved Jason can’t appear in this show.
Obviously that’s about where my excitement dropped off completely because you can throw as many amazing creative people as you want at this show, but if Jason isn’t involved in some way I’m not really interested.
I know that the original movie didn’t feature Jason and he didn’t even get his Hockey mask til 3, but I found this franchise through an AMC Fear Fest marathon and I fell in love with it because of Jason, not his mom.
But anyway, right when things seemed pretty dire on that front, we got a followup clarification from Larry Zerner who pointed out that the show is being executive produced by both Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian.
The reason that’s important is that while Sean Cunningham is sort of the face of Horror Inc, Rob Barsamian owns it so if he’s involved, that means all the elements of the sequels can be used alongside elements of the original movie.
And if it seems a little too good to be true, it honestly makes a lot of sense to me that these two parties would ultimately end up working together on more Friday the 13th because they both came out of the lawsuit with important elements of the franchise and the lawsuit itself only happened because one party wanted the profits split evenly going forward, so to get those future profits they kind of have to work together to make the best possible movie or show happen.
So knowing that, I’d really like to see this be a combination of the first three films in the Friday the 13th series where it starts out with Jason’s mom as the killer and that could maybe be a one-season arc, but then for Season 2, instead of Jason wearing a sackmask with an eyehole and overalls, he ends up coming back as a Jason more similar to the one we see in Friday the 13th Part 3.
I feel like that’s a best of both worlds scenario that not only gives slasher fans like me and i’m assuming you if you’re watching this, what we want but also kind of retroactively fixes some of the weird problems that sprouted up with this franchise’s rushed, super low budget production timelines.
So yeah, the show is probably coming in 2024, it’s going to be on Peacock and it’s being made by Bryan Fuller for Peacock and A24 is footing the bill. Sounds pretty good to me.
