EASTER MONDAY | Pendennis Castle at DIDCOT RAILWAY CENTRE! + A trip to the CHOLSEY & WALLINGFORD!

The final day of the Easter weekend today created the perfect opportunity to visit not one but two preserved railways in a day in Oxfordshire, which were just down the road from each other!

We begin at the Didcot Railway Centre, which was open over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, with GWR 4079 'Pendennis Castle' and the 1940 built GWR Diesel Railcar No. 22 in action on the demonstration lines.

There was also some interest on the mainline during the morning with Climate Hero 66004 initially stabled in the station sidings at Didcot, then coupled up to 66013, 66103 & 66041 which then formed 0Z45 Didcot T.C to Toton T.M.D

While the crew eased 4079 onto the sheds during the lunch break at Didcot, it provided the perfect opportunity to hop onto a Reading bound GWR class 387, for the short run up to Cholsey. There, we jump off at Platform 4, for our second heritage railway visit today, at the delightful Cholsey & Wallingford Railway!

The friendly 2 1/2 mile branch line closed to passengers in 1959 and freight in 1981, when the preservation society was formed. Today they had services running in conjunction with their popular Easter Egg Hunt. From small beginnings this railway has seen considerable development over the last few years and there are many plans still to be fulfilled, with vital funds being raised to help the volunteers make them a reality! We enjoy a trip on the 1pm out of Cholsey behind BR Green shunter 08123 ‘George Mason’ before taking a look around the site at the interesting rolling stock at Wallingford, and have a browse in the well stocked shop with models, books and more railwayana!

As the locomotives are limited to running round at Wallingford, we return on the 2pm to Cholsey hauled by another of the railways shunters, Guinness liveried 08060 ‘Unicorn’ easing through the Oxfordshire countryside towards the mainline, before seeing the 2.30pm departure away and then heading back to Didcot for the remainder of the afternoon, where ‘Pendennis Castle’ and the GWR Railcar continued working along the demonstration lines until 4pm, and then headed back to their respective sheds, bringing to a close a great Easter weekend of railway action!
