Ghoëst - In Eternal Sleep (full demo, 2024)

For this week’s Dungeon Synth Sunday, I am turning over the full session to a showcase of the darkest dungeon doom. To round off the month of January, and usher in a little lightening of the seasons, I will extend the dark with five albums from the sub(sub) genre that dabbles in the most grimly funeral procession of hallucinatory drone.

For my first feature, it is only right that we begin with the progenitor of the form; a project borne from the artist’s black metal, winter synth and dungeon ambient incarnations, until the ultimate entity of Ghoëst was born.

Unveiled in October 2021 with Demo I (The Sad Spirit), every Ghoëst release since has perfectly captured the essence of supernatural ambience echoing through the crumbling halls of decaying castles; of mystic whispers in an eerie mist, and the shadowy cold dread hand of doom looming over all antiquity.

It is a sound that is at once comforting and unsettling, and so fiendishly addictive that few are unable to resist its spell……as we shall hear over the course of the subsequent features in today’s Dungeon Synth Sunday.

The compiled works and ongoing releases of Ghoëst, along with demos from previous projects, Iskall, Hollow Moon and Winter Sphere are collected together under artist A.V.’s Dark Dungeon Doom Productions banner.

Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach - The Fairy Dance (1895)

Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach was a German painter and social reformer who lived between 1851-1913, between Germany and Italy. Diefenbach is regarded as the "forefather of alternative movements" and one of the most important champions of the Lebensreform, the Freikörperkultur and the peace movement, rejecting monogamy and religion, and meat – he was a vegan, living in harmony with nature with three children , named Helios (the Sun), Stella (the Star), and Lucidus (the Shining One). As a painter, Diefenbach was an independent representative of symbolism, whose styles involved watercolour and oils, depicting a mix of landscapes and portraiture.
