Mucky Yorkshire weather - Pontefract to Sherburn run, Service light and garage on Triumph Tiger 800

This ride wasn’t meant to be anything special, and that’s kind of the point. Today was riding my motorcycle from Fitzwilliam to Pontefract and then Sherburn for a quick coffee at Squires on the Triumph Tiger 800. .
Typical December mucky Yorkshire weather with grey skies, damp roads, and a winter landscape with that constant threat of rain meant a short local ride. Still, as most riders know, a short ride is always better than no ride at all.


Despite the conditions, it felt good just to get out. The Triumph Tiger handled the wet roads exactly as you’d expect, solid and confidence-inspiring even when the weather was doing its best to spoil things. There’s something about riding in less-than-perfect conditions that reminds you why you enjoy it so much — it doesn’t always have to be sunny with empty roads to be worthwhile.

Partway through the ride there was a garage stop to deal with the service light, which needed switching off. Nothing exciting, but one of those small, necessary jobs that’s better done than ignored. I managed to make a properly daft mistake at the start of the ride with my Gerbing heated jacket, trying to plug in the wrong end of the lead and wondering why it wasn’t working. I was very aware of my own stupidity — one of those moments every rider has sooner or later.

Even with the weather, the shortened route, and the minor frustrations, the ride left me feeling good. Sometimes it’s not about the destination, the distance, or even the conditions — it’s just about being on the bike. This was one of those rides: simple, uneventful, and oddly satisfying in its own way.

Had I been in the car I would have been there and back in no time, but even on a short ride with the motorbike I had to go the long way around!
