The Turkish and Greek Cypriots both lay claim to what we now call the island of Cyprus. A tiny landmass in the Mediterranean sits divided, with all reunification talks falling through and a continual sense of distrust.
Yet the demilitarised zone between the two Cyprus has become a wildlife sanctuary. With endemic flora and fauna being able to thrive in the haven. Similar to North and South Korea’s demilitarised zone, these untouched areas help support hundreds of species of birds, mammals, amphibians and much more. With 180 endemic plants and 380 bird species it has become a small spark of positivity from the conflict.
Today we are going to cover the modern and prehistoric fauna endemic to Cyprus. From the Cyprus Mouse, Cyprus Pygmy Hippo, Cypriot Genett and Cyprus Dwarf Elephant we will see this fascinating islands fauna. Let's begin.
