Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) is a small deciduous tree with soft, velvety branches and vibrant red berries, often found on natural edges. For woodturning, its lightweight, soft wood—typically pale yellow with a fine grain—cuts easily but lacks durability, making it ideal for small, decorative items like bowls or spindles rather than heavy-duty projects. Its spreading roots and vivid fall colors add character, though it’s prone to cracking if not dried carefully.
