The ship STEFANIA I, of Valletta, heads north (ie: downbound) along the Welland Canal towards Lock 2, in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada, as seen on Oct.9, 2012. The bascule draw bridge (known as Welland Canal Bridge 3A) carries Carlton St. over the canal. The Welland Canal was opened in 1829 to connect Lake Ontario with Lake Erie, and is part of the St.Lawrence Seaway system
