This week's parkrun story comes from Otley Chevin another tough run but, equally, one I am glad to have done.
This was my first time running here and, based on some research, I was anticipating a hard run. This is a two-lap course that goes anti-clockwise, with a small added extra to the finish. You start at Chippendale Ride, running up a slight incline before taking a right up a steep hill. When you reach the top you continue on through Quarry Wood (warning, this part can get pretty muddy). At the end of this path, take a left onto the bridleway and head down the hill before heading left again to double back - the path goes up and down here. Keep going and you'll head left up that steep hill AGAIN. Do the loop again only when you complete it a second time, you head straight on, up a short incline before taking a sharp right to the finish.
The course is pretty much a trail run. In the dry season you'll be fine with running trainers, but in bad weather it might be worth using trail shoes. There's plenty of parking nearby, I parked at the Upper Shawfield Car Park - which does come with a charge now. There are other places to park too and apparently an area that is free too.
On to the race, I had ran a few times during the week which I think helped but it was tough going. It was a slower time than I'd have liked but definitely faster than it could have been, official time 26:55. I even managed to be third in my age category so, I'll take that!

A little about me. I have been running, or taking it seriously, for about 18 months now. The aim really was to aid with my mental health and I must admit I am loving it. Since turning 40 I have found myself doing more Parkruns, more medal races and more walks so I decided to buy a GoPro, along with a Garmin watch, and record them and make them into a YouTube video(s). I don't plan to commentate on them, it's more to give folk an idea of what the course is like beforehand. Hopefully, these videos will also give you some parkrun ideas.
