Today we worked on cutbacks and reaction saves from tight angles, as well as adding a second save element with shots from potential rebound situations. Drills that incorporate two or more actions in a compound activity (near post, far post; down and up; pass and adjust angle for a shot; etc…) are a great way to use the training time effectively, plus, the scenarios created can mirror what would happen in a game situation.
It is important to recognize when the game situations arise in training, and I always have the goalkeepers visualize the game situation (runs being made, rebound scenarios, etc) as they are working through a drill. That way, when it happens in a game, they have seen it all before!
