Barriers to Learning: DISCRIMINATION TRAINING EXPRESSIVE ID PART 3

In this video, Megan demonstrates one version of the procedures we use to promote discrimination. This protocol is typically effective when individualized for each learner because the learner is being exposed to discrimination both in a visual format by sorting the targets that they are struggling to learn and auditory format by hearing the labels for the targets. The two key components to these procedures are making sure the learner has a mixture of stimuli presented so discrimination is occurring. For example, do not do letter, letter, letter, number, number, number as this doesn't require discrimination. And the 2nd component is ensuring reinforcement only happens if the learner responds correctly to BOTH (or all if there are more than 2 targets) targets correctly BACK to BACK. If reinforcement is provided for just responding to 1 target, discrimination is not being trained.

Megan is demonstrating this procedure with errors and correction in this video. She will present the stimuli to Malerie to sort first, label each card as Malerie is sorting it, and then she will ask Malerie to label the stimuli after the sorting procedure. When Malerie does not respond correctly, Megan does not provide a prompt. She repeats the sorting procedure. Reinforcement is only provided after Malerie responds correctly to both targets.
