I didn’t correct her. I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t even point out the obvious—that most husbands wouldn’t just “throw a fit,” they’d walk out. Instead, I chewed my toast, swallowed, and nodded once.
“Of course,” I said. “If Jared needs it.”
Relief flickered across her face, quick and unguarded. She’d expected resistance, maybe a lecture about boundaries or respect. What she got instead was compliance, and it relaxed her in a way that told me more than any confession ever could.
She stood, kissed my cheek—perfunctory, distracted—and went upstairs to pack. I listened to the drawers opening and closing, the familiar sounds of a woman preparing for a trip she had no intention of feeling guilty about.
When the front door finally closed behind her an hour later—off to “run errands”—I walked to the counter and picked up the reservation confirmation. Emerald Coast Resort. Ocean-view suite. One king bed.
I turned it over and noticed something I’d missed before: her handwriting on the back. Jared’s email address. Not new. Worn into the paper like it had been copied more than once.
That was when the anger arrived—but not loud, not explosive. It was quiet and cold and focused, the kind that doesn’t destroy furniture. The kind that builds plans.
I went into my home office and logged into my laptop. Twelve years in commercial real estate had taught me that contracts mattered more than conversations. Paper didn’t lie. Digital trails didn’t forget.
The beach house was non-refundable—but it was transferable.
