Cruis'n Exotica Game Sample - N64

Geez, going through the ol' personal collection, I didn't realize just how many racing/driving games were released for this system... I still have a bunch I haven't made videos for. Originally released in Arcades in 1999, Cruis'n Exotica is the last game within the "Cruis'n" series to be released on the N64, released only in the U.S. late in 2000 for N64 and Game Boy Color. Published by Midway and developed by Gratuitous Games, the game takes a few steps forward but also takes a few steps back. It's a pretty good game, but it's not as exciting and crisp as "Cruis'n World" and is a little more costly as it's more uncommon compared to the first two games.

Cruis'n Exotica features almost thirty cars, twelve primary tracks (with several variations for each which adds many more overall tracks), a few new modes (the main one being "Exotica", where you race every stage but with a few strings attached), and made-up cars (unlike the Arcade game which used real cars). Cruis'n Exotica allows you to make various character profiles which can be saved to the game cart (unlike the previous games) and unlock most things simply by gaining mileage through playing the game. The graphics on a technical level are superior to the previous games (larger vehicles and there is more going on in stages, some of which are beautiful), but the framerate is a little less consistent than Cruis'n World and the music isn't as good (very muffled and the composition just isn't as interesting IMO).

Gameplay-wise, there isn't really anything new (and there are actually less tricks you can perform), but the game is actually easier than prior games. I've had this game sitting in my closet for years and this is my first time playing the game, and I was able to beat the three random stages I selected for this video while placing 1st. It's not simply because "once you've played one, you've played them all", but the computer is just not as aggressive, the game doesn't seem to penalize you as much on crashes or collisions, and there are less difficulty settings compared to the other games.
