After five decades of legendary service, the "Old Salt" has departed San Diego Bay for the last time, bidding farewell to the city she called home from 2001 to 2012. As the oldest active-duty aircraft carrier in the world, her departure marks the end of an era before her scheduled decommissioning.

⚓ The Legacy of the Nimitz:
Commissioned on May 3, 1975, the USS Nimitz was the lead ship of her class—the largest warships ever built until the Ford class. Over her 50-year career, she deployed to the Persian Gulf, the Indo-Pacific, and around the globe, launching aircraft in support of Operation Eagle Claw, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism.
