Fado is a traditional genre of Portuguese music known for its deep emotional expression, often described by the Portuguese word "saudade"—a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia. It's a music of the soul, frequently associated with themes of love, loss, fate, and the sea.
Origins and Story
Fado originated in Lisbon in the early 19th century, particularly in the working-class neighborhoods like Alfama, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto. There are debates about its true origins, but it’s widely believed to have evolved from a mix of Moorish, African, and Brazilian influences, especially from the Lundum, a dance and song style brought by former African slaves.
It was first sung in taverns, docks, and brothels, where sailors, prostitutes, and everyday people expressed their sorrows and joys. Eventually, it gained recognition and moved into more respectable venues, including cafes and theatres.
Styles of Fado
There are two main types:
1. Lisbon Fado – The most popular and emotional style, often featuring a solo singer (fadista) accompanied by a Portuguese guitarra and a viola (classical guitar).
2. Coimbra Fado – Associated with the university town of Coimbra, sung by male students or former students. It’s more formal, often performed at night, and has a more academic and poetic tone.
Structure
Fado songs are usually sung solo, with lyrics that follow a poetic structure. The singer uses subtle vocal ornamentation to express emotion, and the Portuguese guitar weaves intricate melodies around the voice.
Notable Figures
Amália Rodrigues – Known as the "Queen of Fado", she internationalized the genre in the mid-20th century.
Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Ana Moura, and Camané are among the modern voices that brought Fado into the 21st century.
UNESCO Recognition
In 2011, Fado was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its cultural significance.
