The 1999 British Masters Qualifier (Clubmans Championship), comes to Washaway near Bodmin in Cornwall. The meeting was full of close hard racing, with all riders giving it 100% as they try to qualify for the British Masters later in the year. Top man and local rider Paul Fry makes his return to Grasstrack having concentrated on his speedway career for several years, but could he still perform as he once did back on the grass, or would the new young riders that he's not met before have his measure. Matt Read, Paul Cooper, Tommy Palmer, John Jefferies, and the spectacular but very quick Phil Ambrose would all certainly give Fry something to think about.
In the RH Sidecars there are a few crews that are a surprise to see here, none more so than the brilliant Dave Steer and Russell Ing. Surely starting the meeting as favourites to do battle for the Clubman's title, Dave and Russell had plenty of dangers though. Local Cornish crews of Matt Tyrrell, Andy Symons, and Shaun Conway-Baker would all surely be in the shake-up. Paul Whitelam, Mick Turrell, John Hiscock, Craig Cheatham, and former Ken Lane passenger Mark Edwards would all be looking for a qualifying place for the Masters as well. Add in former British LH Sidecar champion Neal Owen, and you've got yourself a hell of a competitive line-up.
