This is a sad, but true story of an abandoned coal mine explorer that lost his life on August 25, 1905 in Sugar Notch, Pennsylvania which is just outside of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County. This story really is a freak event and a true tragedy.
For insight into this story, Methane is a natural occurrence from the coalification process of when Anthracite Coal was formed millions of years ago. The gas can sit trapped in the coal vein until it's freed by events such as coal extraction. Once freed, it moves around the mine and is extremely flammable. Methane explosions have killed many people underground throughout the world unfortunately.
Big shout-out to one of my Central Pennsylvania subscribers that sent me this news story. Thanks man & I appreciate your email.
