Ippudo in Lumine Est, Shinjuku, on the 8th floor, was an easy stop. I’d heard it described as “the most famous tonkotsu ramen shop in the country.” Naturally, I had to try it. I ordered two bowls—the classic tonkotsu in mild and the spicy version—and both were outstanding. The broth was so much more flavorful than I expected: rich, silky, and packed with depth.
The spicy version had just the right kick without overpowering the porky richness, while the mild let the smooth tonkotsu shine on its own. Noodles were springy and perfectly cooked, soaking up the broth with each bite. I often hear and read about how Japanese pictures of goods cannot deviate from the actual product, and that was absolutely true here—the bowls matched the menu photos in both size and quality.
The space itself felt modern and comfortable—brighter and more relaxed than the typical ramen shop—and service was quick and efficient, perfect for a meal in the middle of bustling Shinjuku.
If you’re anywhere near Shinjuku Station and craving ramen, this Ippudo is a must. Whether you go spicy or mild, you’re getting one of the best tonkotsu bowls you’ll find in Tokyo. Enjoy!
