In one of the more questionable plot lines in the Golden Girls series, Dorothy grapples with her son becoming engaged to an older woman.
The mud masks are not black face, but the mud mask is clearly meant to set up a joke where it would be mistaken for black face. Jokes where the punchline is that you're being bigoted are not funny, they're just bigoted. It's just one more way of casually perpetuating a system of oppression. Ultimately, whether this is what's happening isn't for me to decide.
