Let's take a walk on La Duarte in Santo Domingo!
Located just north of Chinatown, La Duarte or Duarte Avenue is named after perhaps the most famous/important figure in the struggle for Dominican Independence - Juan Pablo Duarte, a member of the Trinitarios. There are many storefronts run or owned by local (and Chinese) vendors as well as a plethora of little shops and stalls. These shops and stalls sell basically everything you could imagine at low prices. The area is well known for resale - lots of people buy things in bulk from "La Duarte" and then open little shops and stalls in their own neighborhoods within Santo Domingo or even in other cities/campos (countryside villages/towns).
In this video we start out in the Mercado de Las Flores, take a quick walk up Avenida Duarte and then explore the supermarket Garrido. From what I can tell this store has been around for a while and primarily caters to a lower income market. The store isn't super well lit but it is clean, and the staff are helpful/responsive. I haven't done enough shopping here to comment on prices or selection but I would wager that the prices are on the lower side given the area the store is located in and the customer base that it is servicing.
