Les Tours de Montmayeur - Savoie

On peut admirer les vestiges médiévaux des tours de Montmayeur, sur le site de Montraillant, à 800m d’altitude.
Cette position remarquable entre les deux vallées du Gelon et du Coisin, occupe une plateforme étroite de 250 m de long et 30 à 50 m de large, bordée de parois abruptes.
La dynastie de la famille de Savoie fut partie intégrante du Saint Empire Germanique. Elle contrôlait les voies de circulation permettant le passage des Alpes.
C’est pourquoi le château de Montmayeur, dépendant de la Savoie fut installé ici, pour surveiller notamment la route des crêtes qui passait par le site..
Montmayeur apparait en 1173 dans les biens de la dot d’Alix, fille d’Humbert III de Savoie, pour son mariage avec Jean Sans Terre, fils du roi d’Angleterre Henri II et de la reine Aliénor d'Aquitaine et frère de Richard "Coeur de lion".
Malheureusement, Alix mourut avant d'épouser Jean....
Vers le XIIIe siècle, le château fut inféodé par Thomas Ier de Savoie à une branche cadette de la famille de Briançon-Aigueblanche.
Cette branche, fidèle à la maison de Savoie, prendra alors le nom de Montmayeur.
Saccagé en 1597, lors du passage de l’armée de Lesdiguières, le site des tours de Montmayeur fut déserté au profit de Villard-Sallet et la paroisse fut supprimée.
Inscrit en 1989 à l’Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques, le site archéologique des tours est acquis par la commune de Villard-Sallet en 1991.
Des recherches archéologiques ont d'abord été menées notamment sous la direction de Jean-Michel Poisson. Les campagnes de fouilles, qui se sont étalées sur plusieurs décennies, ont permis de dégager des bâtiments entre les deux tours.
On a ainsi pu identifier l’église paroissiale Saint Julien et un village de paysans avec un four et des maisons dont une maison résidentielle accolée à la tour nord.
Il a également été identifié au centre, à côté de l’église, une butte qui pourrait avoir porté un donjon ou une maison forte
Grâce aux travaux de recherche, de sauvegarde, et une mise en valeur de tout ce travail, le site et les tours sont aujourd’hui préservés et on peut ainsi faire un beau voyage dans l’histoire médiévale de la région !!

You can admire the medieval remains of the towers of Montmayeur, on the Montraillant site, at an altitude of 800m.
This remarkable position between the two valleys of Gelon and Coisin, occupies a narrow platform 250 m long and 30 to 50 m wide, bordered by steep walls.
The Savoy family dynasty was an integral part of the Holy Germanic Empire. It controlled the traffic routes allowing the passage of the Alps.
This is why the castle of Montmayeur, dependent on Savoy, was installed here, in particular to monitor the ridge road which passed through the site.
Montmayeur appears in 1173 in the dowry property of Alix, daughter of Humbert III of Savoy, for her marriage with Jean Sans Terre, son of the King of England Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and brother of Richard "Lionheart".
Unfortunately, Alix died before marrying Jean....
Around the 13th century, the castle was entrusted by Thomas I of Savoy to a younger branch of the Briançon-Aigueblanche family.
This branch, loyal to the House of Savoy, will then take the name of Montmayeur.
Ransacked in 1597, during the passage of Lesdiguières' army, the site of the Montmayeur towers was deserted in favor of Villard-Sallet and the parish was suppressed.
Listed in 1989 in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments, the archaeological site of the towers was acquired by the municipality of Villard-Sallet in 1991.
Archaeological research studies was then carried out, first under the direction of Jean-Michel Poisson. The excavation campaigns, which spanned several decades, made it possible to uncover buildings between the two towers.
We were thus able to identify the Saint Julien parish church and a peasant village with an oven and houses including a residential house attached to the north tower.
It was also identified in the center, next to the church, a mound which could have contained a dungeon or a fortified house...
By the research, the conservation of the ruins, and the promotion of all this work, the site and the towers are today preserved and we can thus take a beautiful journey into the medieval history of the region!!
