I have travelled to Gilgit many times and Hunza is one of my Favourite places. Hunza is known not only for its beautiful blossoms, mouthwatering fruits, mesmerising peaks, and magical streams it is popular for its cultural heritage also. Baltit and Altit Forts in Karimabad being the most ancient and prominent structures. They have a history which dates back hundreds of years. Today we will explore the grand Baltit Fort,
The 700 year old Fort was occupied by the Mir of Hunza until 1945. It underwent many alterations over the centuries, in the 16th century after the Prince married a Princess from Baltistan the fort was renovated as part of her dowry by craftsmen she bought with her from Baltistan. The structure itself is made of wood and stone. It has survived many earthquakes due to the flexibility of the high quality wood. The Building is now being used as a museum which attracts thousands from all over the world every year.
It sits at a height overlooking some beautiful villages near Karimabad.
This was our second visit to this historic place and each time we visit the feeling of travelling back in time is more powerful. The ancient images become a bit more clear in our imagination.
Their is a wealth of antiques, clothing, pictures, household items, weapons, cultural items and information from the era on display.
Guided tours in english and urdu are available at all times of the day at very affordable prices.
The drive up to Hunza, the walk through the village, culture, traditions, the music, the people, the food, the beauty of this region are all so welcoming and captivating.
