Coonan enlisted for the Army Air Corps in 1940, where he spent a year as an engineer before beginning flight training. He was sent to California to begin his flight training. He was then sent to New Mexico to train with the B-17. It was in Salt Lake City, Utah that he would meet his crew, where he was assigned to be the pilot. After completing their training, Coonan and his crew would fly to Europe. Coonan's tour ended after he flew a total of 29 missions. Coonan would return home for a short time before being recalled back to England to fly cargo missions during his second tour. Coonan stayed in the Air Corp for 31 years.
