BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE INTERVIEW
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is one of the most successful movies of the year, a long-awaited follow-up to the beloved 80's horror-comedy classic. Understandably, creating a sequel for such an iconic film is a difficult task. In this video, we speak with Jay Prychidny, the editor on "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." He explains how the movie evolved in the edit, and gets into what it was like to work with Tim Burton.
JAY PRYCHIDNY EDITOR INTERVIEW
Jay began by explaining his journey into filmmaking. He elaborated on his career path, moving from smaller projects to larger, well-known titles, eventually becoming a sought-after editor. When discussing his approach to editing, Jay revealed that he prefers starting with a thorough understanding of the project by reading the script and occasionally working from storyboards. He adapts his process depending on the director and the amount of coverage shot. Jay emphasized the importance of collaboration with directors, as his ideal working relationship involves a strong back-and-forth dialogue throughout the editing process.

Jay also spoke about the challenges he faced while working on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He explained that the film’s editing was highly influenced by Beetlejuice’s chaotic personality, leading to constant shifts in style and rhythm. Much of the film's structure evolved in the edit, as certain scenes that worked on paper didn’t play out as expected. He noted that this is a common part of the editing process, since adjustments are often necessary during post-production. He shared that the balance between Beetlejuice’s comedic and scary sides required distinct approaches, comparing the film’s tone to Looney Tunes.
EDITING TODAY AND BEYOND
Finally, Jay reflected on how the industry has changed for editors today. While connections are still essential, he highlighted how the digital era has made the editing process more accessible, providing aspiring editors with more tools and opportunities to hone their craft. In the end, it all comes down to an editor's capabilities. A good editor is a good editor.
