1997 Sunbelt Indy Carnival Australia - Coming to complete the first lap of the race, Christian Fittipaldi makes contact with Gil de Ferran. After hitting the pit wall, the pit exit meant the wall ended, meaning Fittipaldi's momentum carried him into the next wall over, causing a massive impact. Michel Jourdain Jr. was also involved but seemed to escape any major damage

Fittipaldi would be diagnosed with a broken tib-fib that required surgery. He would miss a good portion of the season, but his first race back was the epic 1997 Portland race, where, despite not being a part of the 3-wide finish, was in contention for the win and finished P4
