This is a very early electric fuel pump. The vehicle uses two of these. They both are mounted with the glass upward as tested here, although an air capture dead-end pocket is cast in that is essentially a synchronous pressure damper chamber (If the fuel pump were mounted with glass bowel hanging down) it would serve- as most mechanical pumps have- as an air 'shock absorber to eliminate backwards pressure pulses that could lift valves at the wrong moments. We made and installed a new Buna Nitril nylon mesh reinforced diaphragm, new phenolic valves and one tubular seat was made, and special attention to the thin-diecast alloy where welding alone was not sufficient to stabilize a thin casting. We reinforced diagonally the formerly welded flange using a self tapping 00/90 hard steel screw, and buried it within the original casting. All good now- and no leaks!
