HORACE SILVER (The Hard Bop Grandpop) Jazz History #55

One of Horace Silver’s later albums was titled The Hard Bop Grandpop. It was fitting as the pianist/composer led one of the quintessential hard bop groups for decades. His compositions had elements of gospel and folksongs from his native Cape Verde, and above all could be classified as ‘feel good’ music. Playing in the Horace Silver Quintet was a rite of passage for upcoming jazz stars; many a high-profile career was launched from his bandstand. Through it all, Horace was a magnanimous and much-loved central figure in jazz history. Bonus: The video features a cameo by Steely Dan.

ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s.
