DIY UTV: Part II - Rolling Chassis

It's time for the second video. Rolling chassis is the goal this time.

The plan is to use Honda Civic front suspension components in each four corners. The Civic front springs are replaced with rear ones to better suit the corner weights of the UTV. The more sharp eyed viewers will notice that most of the suspension components are from a EK Civic but the upper wishbones are from an EG Civic. Only reason being that the EG ones are easier to attach to a tubular frame...but anyway, that's enough Civic talk.

Lets talk about what hasn't come from a Civic then. The steering rack for example. It is a BMW E30 manual steering rack. Meaning that there will be no power steering... at least for now. Meanwhile I have started weight-lifting, because I fear that it might be a huge mistake to have no power steering... but we'll see. Steering ratio is around 3,9-4,0 turns from lock-to-lock, so not too bad but it is still sketchy if you consider the size of the wheels I want to use :)

So wheels... In the video I just fitted some 16" tarmac wheels that I had laying around. The correct tyres I am going to use are a bit bigger than that. Well a lot bigger actually... 255/75R15. So 30" diameter tyres, on 15" rims. The reason I can't fit them now is that I'am still figuring out how to make/find suitable rims, because I need ET0.

The UTV is now rolling, so the next step is the driveline. There is a lot to do. I'm still not 100% sure if the engine fits the frame (quite a big problem if it doesn't!) and the driveshaft/propshaft situation is also quite interesting... Hopefully by the end of the next video I've figured out all of those things and we are one big step closer to the first drive :)
