This film was produced as part of the ESRC funded 'Everyday Bordering in the UK' project. The broad aim of the project was to explore the ways in which the UK's 'hostile environment' towards immigration impacts on social care practitioners and the migrant families with whom they work. In a series of creative workshops, the research team and local artists worked with migrant families living in Hull and Sheffield to explore what 'everyday borders' mean to them. In Sheffield, people chose to use the medium of photography and, in Hull, they chose to create three short films to document how they experience borders in their everyday lives.
In this film, 'Working with People from Different Cultural and National Backgrounds', migrant family members living in Hull - a city in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England - describe their experience of moving to a new country where service provision, and the 'way of doing things' is unfamiliar to them. They also reflect on how the UK government, services, and organisations might support them to understand these unfamiliar systems.
This is a part of a series of three short films that are also incorporated into this training resource, 'Working with Migrant Communities: a resource for practitioners', produced in collaboration with practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds. Please do take the time to watch the other two short films in the series: 'Communication Barriers' and 'Complexities of the Immigration System and Entitlement'.
The project lead is Dr Julie Walsh, based at The University of Sheffield, and the study is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) New Investigator Programme (ESRC project number: ES/S015833/1). The support of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is gratefully acknowledged.
