When Hanneke Boon, Polynesian Wooden Double Canoe Designer and Head of James Wharram Designs, invited us to meet her in Southern Portugal to experience living at anchor on her flagship Spirit of Gaia, how could we refuse? We loaded up the car and drove across four climate regions to hop aboard Gaia and learn all we can about this minimalist traditional boat ahead of our own classic Wharram wooden boat build.
In the year since making this video, we created the Floating Stories Lab non-profitt association, now based in Brittany, France, where we are now building a 41ft Wharram Designs Narai Mk IV wooden composite catamaran.
Collaborating with leading scientists on the impact of end-of-life fiberglass (GRP) boats on oysters and other marine species, we are curious in exploring bio composite alternatives to GRP and bridging the gap between science and policy.
