Nestled in the magnificent Kudremukh range of the Western Ghats, Netravati offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

The trek is around 7–8 hours long and is moderately difficult. One of the perks of doing this trek during the monsoon is the lush greenery, multiple water crossings, and occasional waterfalls in their full glory. The mist, rain and clouds accompany you throughout the journey, making it even more magical. As you gain altitude, you'll be spellbound by the stunning vistas, forgetting all the hardships of the climb.

Netravati Peak is accessible from a village called Samse, located in Chikmagaluru district, Mudigere Taluk. The nearest town to Samse is Kalasa.

The peak can only be reached on foot, and the off-road drive to the base camp is an exhilarating experience in itself. About 3–4 km of off-roading transitions you into a different terrain. At the forest check post in the base camp, you must submit your booking details before proceeding. The trek must be booked in advance through the Aranya Vihara website of the Karnataka Forest Department. There is no spot booking, and the number of people allowed per day is limited to 300, so I advise booking at least a week in advance to secure your spot. A guide will be assigned at the check post, which is mandatory.

As of June 2025, the trekking charges are ₹500 per person, and guide charges are ₹1000 per person/group.

Please note:

Plastic, cigarettes, and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Bags will be checked thoroughly by forest officials.

Small cameras are allowed free of cost, but DSLRs with lenses above 300mm will incur additional charges.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I assure you it’s worth every bit of effort. The occasional rain, mist, leeches, and tiredness will all fade away once you reach the top and witness the majestic beauty of the Western Ghats.
