I'm joined by my friend Mikko to check out his Squier Jazzmaster. We're upgrading it with new pickups and some new electronics to make it even nicer.

In this video, my friend Mikko and I take on the challenge of upgrading his already-modded Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster — turning it into a “Vintage Modified Modified Jazzmaster”! We walk through the original modifications Mikko made, including replacing the stock bridge with a StayTrem bridge, installing a new pickguard from a J Mascis Jazzmaster, and shimming the neck for better break angle and playability. But we didn’t stop there.

We dig into the electronics and tone issues by swapping out the stock Duncan Designed pickups for a set of Fender Pure Vintage '65 Jazzmaster pickups—the same ones found in American Vintage Jazzmasters. We also upgrade the pots, wiring, jack, and switch, replacing the noisy and unreliable stock electronics with a streamlined Tele-style wiring setup after ditching the rhythm circuit entirely.

Along the way, we talk tone shaping—why we replaced the stock 1M volume pot with a 500k pot for smoother treble control, and how these changes impact the Jazzmaster’s tone with both clean and driven amps.

After some (very real) struggles with soldering and wiring, we finally plug it in and compare before-and-after tones using the same amp and pedal settings. The results? Clearer, more dynamic, and more vintage-accurate Jazzmaster tones—all for well under €500.
