City Park, founded in 1905, was one of the original four parks in La Junta. Its establishment was quite controversial at the time. The site, initially featuring a shallow arroyo, was considered ideal by the City Fathers for creating a small lake. However, there was a significant issue: it was located about half a mile south of downtown La Junta, which many deemed too far from town. Some opposed the expenditure on a park so distant from the town center. Fortunately, they did invest in it. Over the past hundred years, La Junta has grown around the park, making it an integral part of the community.
