Struggling to know God's will for your life? You're not alone. Many Christians spend years paralyzed by indecision, waiting for signs, or treating God's will like a secret code to crack. In this powerful sermon from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, discover why the typical approach to finding God's will leaves us frustrated and anxious—and learn the two biblical adjustments that will transform your walk with Christ.
THE REAL PROBLEM WITH FINDING GOD'S WILL
Most believers get stuck because they focus on what they don't know instead of obeying what God has already revealed. We obsess over non-moral decisions—which job, which school, which city—while ignoring God's clear commands about holiness, joy, and faithfulness.
Scripture gives us four clear aspects of God's will that require no guessing:
Be holy and set apart from sin (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
Be joyful, prayerful, and thankful in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Be fruitful in good works and grow in Christ (Colossians 1:9-12)
Be Spirit-filled, worshipful, and grateful (Ephesians 5:17-20)
God cares more about who you are than where you are. His will isn't a treasure map—it's a way of life marked by holiness, joy, and trust.
ADJUSTMENT 1: STOP LETTING UNCERTAINTY KILL YOUR PASSION
Don't allow what you don't know to suffocate the joy and passion for what you already know God wants. Too many Christians become passive, waiting for mystical signs instead of actively pursuing righteousness, joy, and fruitfulness.
As Kevin DeYoung warns, "Passivity is a plague among Christians. We feel spiritual for not doing anything, imagining our inactivity is sensitivity to God's leading."
The solution? Get holy. Get joyful. Get fruitful. Get Spirit-filled. Seek first His kingdom, and everything else will be added (Matthew 6:33).
ADJUSTMENT 2: LIVE BY FAITH, NOT FEELINGS
Stop treating your emotions, circumstances, or sense of "peace" as the ultimate test for God's will. Even Jonah had peace while disobeying God—sleeping soundly on a ship heading away from Nineveh!
Instead of relying on subjective feelings, trust God's promises. Jesus taught us not to be anxious about tomorrow but to live faithfully today (Matthew 6:25-34). Peter reminds us that God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness through His precious promises (2 Peter 1:3-4).
THE SOLUTION TO ANXIETY ABOUT THE FUTURE
Anxiety is simply "living out the future before it gets here." God calls us to trust His provision day by day, not demand a complete roadmap for our lives.
God's will isn't a riddle to solve—it's a life to live. When you focus on being holy, joyful, fruitful, and Spirit-filled, you can move forward with confidence, knowing your heavenly Father handles the rest.
