Located on the south coast of England, in the county of West Sussex, is the town of Bognor Regis, or commonly referred to as simply, Bognor.
The name 'Bognor' comes from a Saxon word meaning 'rocky shore'. 'Regis' means 'of the king', and was added to the town's name in 1929 when George V visited whilst convalescing from an illness.
As is the case with many seaside towns in the UK, Bognor Regis was for many centuries a small fishing hamlet. This began to change in the 18th century when property developer Richard Hotham bought up 1600 acres of land in the area. With a view to promoting the curative benefits of the sea area, Hotham had hoped to attract gentry to Bognor in the manner of other towns such as Brighton and Weymouth. Since then, multiple monarchs have visited, including George III, Victoria and, as alluded to earlier, George V.
In 1864 Bognor Railway Station opened, with a line connecting it to the nearby village of Barnham. To this day, Barnham serves as a junction station between Bognor Regis and other locations. The railway connection opened up Bognor to an influx of Victorian tourists. Then in the following year of 1865 Bognor Pier opened. This pier would later serve as a Royal Navy observation station during the Second World War.
Bognor's most significant period growth came in the 20th century. Following on from its name's royal upgrade to Bognor Regis in 1929, it would later attract the attention of one Billy Butlin. By 1932 Butlin had already opened a thriving amusement park in Skegness on the east coast. Spotting a similar opportunity in Bognor Regis he purchased land on the corner of Lennox Street and The Esplanade, calling it Butlin's Recreation Shelter. This was the genesis for what would become Butlin's Holiday Camp in 1960, where it remains to this day as one of the largest employers in Bognor Regis.
