Beyoncé famously got her start in R&B as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child, the Houston-based trio that went on to become one of the most successful girl groups of all time. Their songs layered complex harmonies with lyrics about love, heartbreak and empowerment. Even then, Beyoncé proclaimed her country roots, as heard in the 2004 single “Soldier.” She performed four times at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, twice as a solo artist. In 2021, Beyoncé dropped Ivy Park Rodeo as part of her collaboration with Adidas. The collection was inspired by RodeoHouston and included chaps, denim and several pieces in a purple and brown cow print.
“The Houston Rodeo is a gumbo of family, connection, delicious food and eclectic genres of music. After understanding where the word 'cowboy' #entertainment came from, I realized how much of the Black, brown and Native cowboy stories are missing in American history,” Beyoncé told the Chronicle in 2021. “I am proud to represent Houston culture, my roots and all the people who understand fried Snickers and fried turkey legs.”
