A change in the way brothels were allowed to operate in Kalgoorlie meant some would be forced to close, and owners like Irene faced an uncertain future. Kalgoorlie’s famous red-light district had strong support in the town, despite the fact that prostitution was illegal in Western Australia. Police claimed they didn’t attempt to control brothel operations, they merely tried to contain them. ABC reporter David De Vos interviewed madam Irene in May 1978.
