Decades ago, the distress beacon stopped sending signals. The ship, which survey teams called Object K-447, floated through the Outer Veil sector like a tombstone in a graveyard of stars. Its hull was blackened by fire, pitted with damage from micrometeorites, and covered in the telltale frost that comes from being in deep space. People who bothered to look at it saw it as just another piece of space junk, another ship and dream lost in the endless void.
"Another piece of junk," Commander Hayes said as he looked over the scan data at the orbital station. He sat in his leather chair with his feet on the desk and hardly looked at the holographic display that was spinning in front of him. "Mark it for salvage sweep in five years." We have better things to do than go after every ship that has sunk in this area. The business wants results, not stories about ghosts.
The junior officers in the room all nodded in agreement. Resources were scarce, and the Outer Veil sector was known for being a graveyard for failed missions and abandoned ships. Every ship that went to look into it cost money, time, and people—resources that could have been better used for mining or starting new colonies.

But Marcus Webb, a seasoned scout with twenty years of experience exploring deep space, couldn't shake the feeling that was eating away at him. He stood at the back of the briefing room with his arms crossed, staring at the rotating hologram so hard that it made his coworkers uncomfortable. There was something about this ship that called to him and whispered secrets that only he could hear.
