Sur une musique de l'Américain Lowell Mason (1792-1872), la poétesse britannique Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848) écrivit le choral "Nearer, My God, to Thee".
Ce choral fut traduit en français avec plusieurs textes.

Ce choral est connu pour avoir été joué sur le RMS Titanic alors que le paquebot coulait. Lors du naufrage, plusieurs musiciens restèrent impassibles et jouèrent cette mélodie avec émotion.
