The Mount Wu Tong hike in Shenzhen, China, is a popular, rewarding, yet challenging hike.
Distance - 12km
Duration - 6 hours (Includes rest & photos)
Difficulty - 2.5/5
Beginner to Intermediate
It offers stunning city and bay views, featuring stone steps and various trails. Near downtown Shenzhen, close to Yantian Port, with popular routes like the Xiutong trail or Bitong Dou leading to Shenzhen’s highest peak.
We started the journey at Lok Ma Chau, Futian District. Take the local train to Shenwai Senior Campus Station (line 8), exit C. It only takes a few minutes on foot to get to the Zhong Qingxi Ecological Park.
We took the less challenging route to the top of the mountain, located on the Xiu Tong Trail. There is an information board with details, and it is easily spotted. The paved road is slightly uphill, and once reaching an archway trail entrance, this begins the ascent up towards the stairs.
From there, we headed up numerous flights of stairs and stone steps, which went on until the very top of the mountain.
Along the way, don’t forget to look back towards the Bay Area and the view of the nearby mountains; you will be able to see the mountains in Hong Kong as well.
Just before reaching the top, you will find a Sky Pool. It is one of the spots where many people take photos before heading up the summit of Wu Tong.
The top of the summit during our visit was packed with lots of people; it was hard to get a decent photo at the summit.
After resting for a while, we decided to descend the summit and head toward the direction to Hero Slope (好漢坡)
This portion of the hike is a long, steep downhill descent along flights of stairs before coming to a stop at a convenience store and proper toilets in the area.
From there, we rest and refuel before we continue to head down the road. Here on out, the road is an easy downhill walk before we turn into another trail section to continue.
The trail section leading down consists of dirt paths and a few stony sections. The trail is well marked, and there are no problems navigating to reach the end of the trail back onto the road.
Once on the paved road again, we now pass the Shenzhen TV Tower, one of the icons of the Shenzhen skyline. We have seen the tower before at Robin’s Nest Country Trail, but now he had the chance to see it closer.
Overall, the hike is enjoyable, and there are no issues getting around the trails as they are properly marked. Refueling is also not a problem, as there are plenty of spots along the trail, the stairs, and even the summit where refreshments are being sold.
We recommend wearing appropriate apparel and comfortable hiking shoes. A compact hiking bag is enough to bring along supplies needed for the hike.
