For awhile I've been contemplating snagging a TLR, and didn't necessarily know where to start. I knew what I wanted out of a camera, but not out of a TLR. after watching a couple videos from some of the OG's (Matt Day, Kyle McDougall, Etc) I was pretty convinced on trying out the Yashica Mat 124G.
First off, it marks off all the check marks for me on a camera, great optics, ease of use, and a built in light meter; although a built in light meter isn't essential, it's a big plus. It produces some magical images, and I'm incredibly happy with my decision. Although I may one day go back to the Bronica Systems, whether it be the ETRS, SQ, or GS I'm not sure.
On the other hand, the camera feels quite delicate, not being made out of a lot of metal, its a VERY light camera, which is nice, but also feels like I have to baby it. It's held up just fine over the last 3 months, so no complaints as of yet. Another thing to keep in mind, which is brought up a lot in others videos is that the viewing screen is quite dim, and has no split prism for focus assist. You can get away with shooting with the stock screen if you so choose, but i would recommend getting a ground glass replacement from Rick Olsen. (http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-175.html) Wonderful gent, and the new screen makes for a better viewing/focusing experience.
Closing thoughts, I love this camera. Like a lot. The square format is a restriction that comes with fun creative choices. It's a joy to shoot, and would recommend to anyone.
